The Size Of Wales (and other places)

This May Come In Handy At A Pub Quiz Some Day

"An area the size of Wales" is something you'll hear now and again in the British media when reporting on massive floods or some other catastrophe. Most people outside of the UK don't know where Wales is, let alone how big or small it is. Some people I've met on my travels even assume that Wales is a city rather than a country. Well, for those of you from North America, Wales (8022 square miles) is roughly the size (a little smaller, in fact) of New Jersey (8721 square miles).

Blue: Scotland (30414 sq mi; smaller than Maine but larger than West Virginia)
Orange: Northern Ireland (5345 sq mi; slightly smaller than Connecticut)
White: England (50346 sq mi; smaller than Louisiana but larger than Mississippi)
Red: Wales (8022 sq mi; slightly smaller than New Jersey)
